Continuing our series of interviews and viewpoints from speakers at Hadoop Summit Europe, this interview is with Anurag Shrivastava, Head Solution Delivery Centre (Customer and Business Intelligence), ING Bank who will be speaking on “Making banks predictive and real-time” as part of the ‘Hadoop for Business Apps’ track on Day 1, at 4:20pm.
HS: Tell us a little about your session.
I work for a large bank in Amsterdam and manage a delivery centre responsible for data warehousing and marketing solutions. We would like to move from batch oriented and traditional data warehouse to real time and big data oriented data warehouse. Last year we decided to explore Hadoop as a candidate technology to build our new data platform to deliver predictive and real time services to our customers. This session covers our vision about Big Data and how our journey in implementing Hadoop has been so far.
HS: What made you want to talk about Building Realtime and Predictive Banks?
During the exploration, we came across several internal and external organizational hurdles related to strict processes, risk and compliance issues. We found that Hadoop way of working is somewhat disruptive for large organizations that have built their IT systems based upon enterprise software and hardware sold by large vendors. I felt that traditional data warehousing departments hoping to migrate to big data platform can learn from our Hadoop experience.
HS: What sessions are you most interested in seeing?
I am keen on following the tracks related to Hadoop applications. The tacks such as Real Time Market Basket Analysis for Retail with Hadoop and How Hadoop can help in deciding where to better invest your marketing budget are very interesting. I am also curious to learn about innovations in Hadoop ecosystem and the status of Hive project.
HS: Thanks! Good luck with your session, and we’ll see you in Amsterdam.
