Meet the Presenters: Joydeep Sen Sarma of Qubole

Today’s interview features Joydeep Sen Sarma, co-founder of Qubole. Joydeep and his co-presenter Siva Narayanan, will be presenting Cloud-Friendly Hadoop and Hive, a discussion about how organizations can now easily analyze Hadoop data in the cloud.

Tell us about your presentation.

Joydeep: We’ll talk about the different challenges and opportunities that a cloud environment provides and how we have extended tools like Hadoop, Hive, Pig, Sqoop and Oozie to run well in this new world. We’ll cover how you can exploit the elasticity available in the cloud to automatically handle peak workloads, lower costs by automatically incorporating spot-instances and mask latencies by doing I/O optimizations. We will present use-cases that show how it can be extremely easy for an end-user (even a non-technical user) to use cloud analytics technologies to leverage the power of Big Data.

What do you expect will be the single biggest takeaway of your presentation for attendees?

Joydeep: Cloud analytics services, like Qubole, when done well, can greatly lower the barrier for those looking to get insights out of their data and to build data-driven applications.

Tell us about your current role and how you interact with Hadoop.

Joydeep: I am a co-founder at Qubole, spending most of my waking hours (and some sleeping ones) thinking about our Product and Technology. I am routinely involved in engineering Hive and Hadoop internals as well as helping our customers use our service effectively.

What are you most looking forward to at Hadoop Summit?

Joydeep: Looking forward to seeing what are the latest developments in Hadoop, how users are using it and how we can be part of it.
